I have rented points at for a standard 1-bedroom at BLT in January. Is there any way I can upgrade to a theme park view and pay with cash? Has anyone ever done that?
It is my understanding that any such upgrade would debit the owner’s points.

@OBNurseNH is correct on this. You should never ask for an upgrade when renting points.
The CMs would simply use extra points, borrowing if necessary, to book the requested room. Which may affect the owner’s future plans.
In fact even asking for a “better room” could result in an upgrade, even if that’s not what you intended. There is very little room for reassigning rooms in DVC resorts. They usually run at 98% + capacity.
