I think these large groups have a bigger overall impact on the resort experience than the park experience.

We went in early May 2018 and thought the crowds were pretty low. There were cheer groups there, but they really didn’t cause an issue in the parks. We were more annoyed with them at the food court at POR, creating a difficult time finding a table and watching girls get their hair done in an area where people are eating.
The weather was nice. It did get hot in the afternoon, but it cooled down in the evening. So I would go with late April/early May.
