Too soon?

It sounds like they’re asking sunscreen manufacturers to voluntarily test 12 non-mineral active ingredients for safety. Great idea. I won’t hold my breath for, say, Banana Boat to spend money on a series of studies that could lead to data indicating that a product it sells isn’t safe. Shouldn’t the FDA or some other governmental body be doing this testing? Obviously the manufacturing companies can sell the products without proving safety, so they are not incentivized to do this testing.

DS had a skin reaction to Badger Baby, but can use Coppertone WaterBabies Pure and Simple, which is a mix of mineral and chemical sunscreens. (Not to be confused with Waterbabies Pure and Simple Free, which is just chemical active ingredients.) They have come out with a new product, Coppertone Kids Pure and Simple Sunscreen Lotion, which has just Zinc Oxide for an active ingredient. I’m kind of excited to try it. Though I wish they’d come up with a greater variety of names!
