The Motion Sickness Thread! 🤢

No first hand experience, but I’ve read a lot of on line reviews. The consensus seems to be that Monsters is not as motion sickness inducing.

I can only offer a non motion sick perspective. The movements are similar, but the screens are much, much less. I think that helps. There’s still a lot to look at, but you aren’t looking at movement on screens (as often) - more practical effects.

I do think that will help, but what I discovered on my second ride on FJ (in Hollywood, actually) while trying all the tricks I had heard - close your eyes, focus on something stationary, etc. - was that the thing that aggravated my motion sickness the most was the galloping motion that is meant to simulate hovering on a broom. It was like being on rough seas. I’m not particularly prone to seasickness, but this was the worst seasickness I had ever felt, then jacked it up on steroids.

So I’m wondering if the motion is the same in that regard.

Monsters Unchained is an amazing, awesome ride. I was afraid to ride it because Forbidden Journey makes me feel so bad. I was pleasantly surprised when I rode it this past week at Epic. There are so many massive animatronics and the screens employed on the ride are the most high def screens I’ve ever seen.

Good feedback! I may have to try it …

Bumping this thread now that more people have had a chance to visit Epic. Any thoughts on my descriptions and classifications of Epic attractions?

Thanks in advance!

DH has motion sickness issues (he can’t do Star Tours, avoids all the coasters, bailed at the last minute on FOP due to anxiety after hearing the warnings, but he is ok on Soarin).

At Epic, he was able to do Monsters Unchained without any issues (even when riding twice back to back). However, BaTM destroyed him!

That is so odd! Has he ever done Forbidden Journey?

No, he’s never attempted Forbidden Journey. He typically avoids most screen based rides. He only decided to try BaTM because we knew we were going to be in the queue for a while and the plan was originally for him to go through the queue with the rest of us and exit when we got to the ride. But on that day, I guess he either forgot about his issues, or he just didn’t realize what it would be like since it was new. He knows now, and has vowed never again!

I’m less concerned with motion sickness than death. Admittedly I am a rollercoaster weenie, but I’m going to ride Rock N Roller Coaster this trip. So, my biggest questions is, will I die? I’m pretty sure I will die… I think people fall out of that thing all the time and if the lights were on you would see the floor littered with bodies… I’m right aren’t I?

Ha! RnR is the first coaster (first coaster ever for her) I put my DD6 on during our last trip. Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s a bit more intense than I remembered. I’m not a coaster gal anymore per se, but I would always ride that one. She loved it and the picture is absolutely hilarious. She is the type of kid that I knew would enjoy it though–I would not recommend this for all kids of course.

That said, I’m having a hard time with Aerosmith going away, so it’s not longer in my top 3 rides at Disney :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

I note that you completely dodged answering the question, so I assume you know that I will die.

You are so funny! I guarantee you will not die, but, if you do, perhaps we can have a liner meet in the Haunted Mansion in May or June :alien:

I don’t think you can put BatM in the same category as Mario Kart. I also would categorize Hiccup’s closer to Slinky than 7DMT. It’s fast! Lastly, are you missing Stardust Racers or is it me?

The categories are divided by type of consideration - in this case both have simulated components - and then I roughly ordered them based on the severity of the effect. I did it this way because some people have issues with one category (e.g., simulation) but not another (e.g., spinning). So it’s not as helpful to compare Dumbo to Star Tours. For some people, Star Tours may be fine while Dumbo would be completely out of the question even though it’s objectively tamer.

I will note that. To me those two are pretty similar.

It was there. It’s a lot of information though so I don’t fault you for missing it. :joy:

I put it with 7D because the carts sway…or Hagrids because backwards.

Overall intensity wise, definitely slinky. I was just trying to think like a motion sick person.

This is where poor DS7 would strongly agree with you  I actually don’t remember the carts moving like SDMT!

Ah, ok I missed this but of the methodology.

My husband gets sick on Star Tours, 3d Ratatouille, etc and felt nauseous after Curse of the Werewolf. He did not ride Battle at the Ministry or Mario Kart. He was fine on Monsters Unchained, which I was surprised about because he has never been sicker on anything than Forbidden Journey

Hi all - I tried to skim through and see if this was mentioned but didn’t see it. Has anyone tried Allclair inhalers for motion sickness? Saw it on Amazon. Seems like an easy, non medicated way to treat motion sickness but I’m curious about actual Disney ride experience with it. Everyone’s motion sickness is so different!
I haven’t been to Epic yet but at Disney, Bonine helps with almost all rides except GotG. I’ve ridden 3 times and I survive but it’s not a lovely feeling. I’ve tried the wristbands, Bonine, chewing mint gum, riding in the morning, staring at head in front of me, asking for middle cars, eating a banana before, etc but I feel sick every time and kind of just try to breathe til the ride is done. Maybe singing along would help, as some of you mentioned! I’d just sit it out but my kids always want me to go with them  Anyway, just curious if anyone else had used Allclair or anything similar?

I can relate… I have the same problem with GotG. I would really love to enjoy that ride with my family.
