DVC is not for everyone. If you only go to Disney every 3-4 years or only stay value it may not be for you.
There are options for people that do want to consider either direct DVC purchase from Disney or DVC resale (cheaper but with restrictions that vary by purchase). Edited to add: you will not be “ripped off” if you purchase direct or resale. I think the question is more “is this a purchase that makes sense for my future Disney plans”. The answer is not always “yes”.
