I have three boys that never really cared about the kids versions of suitcases. We are a carry on only family and I have always been able to fit the three kids clothes in a carry on suitcase. We normally have access to a washer and dryer so that helps me reduce the amount of clothes. They each have a backpack with personal items things for the airplane, rain jacket, small blanket, and of course the electronics. They have always been great about carrying their own backpacks and then they take turns with their suitcase and then get the opportunity to take off the backpack and attach it to the suitcase.

I picked up two of these little 18” spinners at TJ Maxx (for a MUCH lower price than quoted on this page) for my girls. They are just the right size for the kids to pull and I can pop it on top of the stroller or another bag if they get tired of it. They actually hold a decent amount and qualify as a personal item on Frontier as well.
