Renting DVC points to family-I got questions!

I was going to suggest you exploring the possibility of that new resort that has numerous huge accommodations for a fraction of the cost of a Disney location

Can’t think of the name of it… it’s brandy new. HUGE (like enormous huge) lagoon pool in the middle, lots of water sports available…

Yes that’s the one. I could only come up with Endless Summer which I know to be in the shadowy place
Endless…Evermore . You see my struggle

For sure. I’m TERRIBLE at remembering names of people…even people I’ve been friends with for ages! Sometimes I’ll see someone at church (where I’ve been going for 13+ years now) and pass by someone I know full well, and yet my brain seizes on what their name is. I’m like, “Hi…there.” Only after passing by, I’ll be like, “Oh! Bob. It was Bob!” Very frustrating. I would blame my age, but I’ve had this problem since the time I was a kid!

So, yeah…remembering the name of a resort isn’t high on the list of things to try to remember!

We actually did this about 5 years ago, but our situation was very different and a lot more of a sure thing, and even then it turned out riskier than I thought.

Husband’s dad and stepmom wanted to take everyone to Disney and Universal and the beach in 2021. Asked me to work on the specifics. I looked into renting DVC, off-site at a rental house, and value resort rooms. They chose DVC and knew what the price range was. Then I realized that getting someone to book our 2-bed and 2 studios at BLT at 11 months might be a challenge, and looked into resale contracts. We talked with them and asked what they thought about us buying a contract and them paying us the same as the rental price would cost, to offset our purchase price. They were all for it (especially since it meant I had control of the reservations). So we bought, took out a loan for the purchase, passed ROFR, and used the banked points on the contract for a little getaway after the reopening in 2020. Banked the 2020 points. Walked reservations to the dates they wanted in 2021, and three months later they wanted to postpone to 2021, but now I have 2021 and borrowed 2022 points locked up into 2021! Thank goodness they were generous about putting points back into their use year back then, so I just had to find a use for the banked points. Luckily I found a renter for those, so that paid for our annual fees in 2021. I then walked dates for 2022 again and this time we actually went. After they paid out on the rental I was able to pay off the loan (it paid for about 2/3 of the cost) and we’ve had our points to use or rent since then. It all ended well, but it was a little nerve-wracking in 2021 when we thought they might cancel the whole thing and we’d have debt we didn’t really want or need.

All of this to say, if you already had a contract, I’d say go for it. But even in my “sure thing” scenario, it wasn’t a sure thing, so I would not buy a contract just for this purpose.

That lagoon pool looks fantastic! Still looking at over $1000 per night. Better than a cash room at Disney no doubt! But that close to Disney and we would want to go to Disney a couple nights. And my mom said she wanted to be onsite for her next Disney visit. We would have to rent 2 cars (or a very large passenger van) to fit everyone. So that adds a chunk to the offsite price as well.

I am the same way! My mom tried to teach me to say names over and over. But that doesn’t work for me. I remember faces very, very well. Names? I say “hun” a lot!

You can rent a nice house (4+ beds/baths, private pool, etc) for under $200/night if you look. (I use VRBO.) If you factor in renting cars, it still ends up cheaper.

I remember your entire story! But not your name. “Isn’t she the one who is from California but moved to DC because her husband got stationed at the Pentagon?” :woman_facepalming:

I’m starting to think the Native Americans were smart when they would give names to people based on what they did, etc.

“Hello, Runs with Antelope!”
“Howdy, Falls from Tree!”

Your friend would be known as “Moved to DC because Husband’s At Pentagon!”

Or “hates humidity because it is never humid in SoCal” :joy:

Would be about $5000 for the least expensive 3BR, OKW.

Totally! I’ll be fine having a contract if our big family trip turns out somewhere else. I would be smart about the total point I purchase being what we may use in an average year (outside of the family trip). I would bank and borrow if need be but I think the points cost is around 223 pts iirc for 4 nights in a 3BR at OKW. So I could even make a 100 point contract work if the use year falls right. I found a couple for a little over twice what we would rent points for.
Still, a lot to think about. Hearing everyone’s thoughts and experiences helps me to see things from every angle.

If we do Disney as the family trip onsite is a must. I would be good with a couple ASM Suites but my mom wants everyone under one “roof”. We’ve done all of our big family trips that way. We do them every 3 years or so. Taking mid day breaks when you aren’t onsite is very hard. And getting my sister and mom out the door and ready to go is very… time consuming, lol! Adding even a half hour transit time to the mornings at the parks could really make visiting the parks in the morning not worth it.

Question: you have mentioned that you’re a TA

Any chance you’d be willing to book the rooms for cash and then pass on your commission as cash back to your family once it’s paid out? Just thinking/wondering if that coupled with any available discounts would be significant enough to make that a viable option as an alternative to the DVC purchase (which honestly it sounds like you’re… well… sold on LOL)

Even the cash rate for a 3 BR OKW minus my commission is 2/3s of the DVC contract. I’ve thought about that though. And Grand Villas don’t get the discounts normally. If I can convince my mom that we can do 2 or 3 different rooms that would be a better idea.
My sister seems to think mom won’t want to do Disney in June. So that may have settled it. (But I’m still searching for a contract, lol) I was holding out to hear more about the Poly tower. Now I’m back to OKW extended, SSR, AKL or CC contracts.
