Except the opera! We’ll be seeing Iolanta at the State Opera House! My first opera (possibly my last
).
I am so excited for pastries!

Oh awesome! I’m so glad you are going!
I always hesitate to recommend the opera because it’s a unique taste. But the building is worth it. Enjoy!!
Do you like smoked salmon?
Not a fan.
Ok skip the Nordsee kiosks then ![]()
Just found out that the Opera is playing Hansel & Gretl while we are there. Trying to decide if we do it with my kids. I’m leaning towards doing it!
How old are your kids? How long is that performance?
Iolanta is only about an hour and a half, and I’m very happy about that!
They’ll be 7 and 10 by December. It’s a 60 minute first act with an intermission and a 45 minute second act. I was looking for something more like the “Holiday Pops” which we have done, but this looks like fun too.
I would not miss it, actually I am going to it again in December.
Thanks for the input!
I envy your travel schedule, you do seem to get around a lot!
Sometimes I have to thank my wife. When I was in Vienna, I was tagging onto one of her work trips. I really am lucky, I was touring the city solo but she had already been there several times and told me exactly what I should see. After she was done work we did rent a car and drove around Austria for about a week.
That all sounds wonderful!
You will enjoy Vienna, it’s a pretty city and very easy to get around.
Wie geht’s @ParkRanger ??
I was too busy to do a live trip report!
Quick photo dump for anyone interested…
First stop … Vienna!
I did learn to like coffee … a little. This is the traditional Viennese “melange”—sorta like a cappuccino?
Albertina Museum was great! We played a game where we picked one painting in every room that we most wanted to hang in our house.
First dinner was at a “heuringen” (wine garden) about 30 minutes from downtown. Right smack in the middle of the vineyard.
This is not the Danube per se, but a canal off the river.
Random picturesque alleyway.
The famous Cafe Mozart. Great for people-watching!
Second dinner. I won’t bore you with all my food pics, but this was representative because it included two traditional Viennese dishes: schnitzel and boiled beef.
Herr Mozart and random Fraulein.
Another excellent museum, the Kunsthistorisches. More old school.
Sorry, another food pic. Classic sweet treat sometimes (as on this occasion) consumed as a meal: kaiserschmarrn (ripped-up pancakes, basically).
St. Peter’s—gorgeous church.
Okay I lied, there will be more food pics. Excellent burrata salad featuring a blob of housemade ice cream that somehow was the perfect condiment.
Our view at the Vienna State Opera. Total splurge on front-row box seats. The show was Iolanta. We enjoyed it! Would possibly try another (short) opera some day.
The grand ballroom (or whatever it was called) at the Schönbrunn—the “summer palace.”
View of the Schönbrunn from way up on a big hill that I’m glad we didn’t tackle on a hot day.
Cool labyrinth on the grounds of the Schönbrunn.
Exterior of our hotel. Very nice, quirky hotel in the heart of District 1.
