Ok we were off the ship from about 8:45am to 8:40iiiish pm which is a crazy long port day. I’m exhausted and I am setting my alarm for 5:30am tomorrow (of course I’m getting more adjusted finally) so I’ll do some highlights of Juneau. We loved it.

OMG! That would be such a cool thing to see in person. We saw a whole bunch of whales quite close up when we were in Juneau, but not that! Very jealous.

I’m very glad you got to see the whales “bubble feeding.” We did a whale-watching boat tour on our trip, and were lucky to see a pod of whales doing that many times. Did you notice how any seagulls on the water near them, would suddenly take flight just before the whales came up? Our guides taught us to watch for that as an early-warning for whales about to surface while bubble feeding.

I definitely over packed the backpack for yesterday! We have been super lucky with no rain and a little sun which obviously makes it warmer. It’s been mid-50s to low-60s all 3 days so far in Alaska. (Vancouver was warmer.) My boys are in their usual sweatshirts and haven’t been cold. We brought their winter jackets yesterday that they didn’t really wear. I thought it would be much colder than it was on the water. It’s been really comfortable with just long pants and long sleeves.
DS10 and I rode on the front of the boat and we’re totally fine with this little blanket. I’m just wearing a rain coat.

Puppies in the Piazza! 
But we didn’t stay for the actual puppies because we knew it would be a let down. And they do it at 6pm probably hoping that most families will be at dinner (which we were).
We saw and got to touch real sled dogs today anyway!
Believe it or not it was too hot for the sled dogs to work today! So we didn’t get a ride but it was fun anyway.
We had an incredibly long day today, somewhat intentionally but also increased by a medical emergency on our train that delayed us close to 90 minutes. So bed now and I’ll post more in the morning. Glacier Bay!!!

We were fine getting back to the ship! These port calls have been really long. Like today was 6am to 8pm but also a tender port. Our tour started at 7:15 so we lined up for the tender at 6:30 (which ended up being earlier than necessary). The tour was supposed to be back around 2:30 but we got back at 4. My mom and I were still able to shop downtown (which was really cute!) but my kids were toast. There was more bus riding than I honestly had expected.
We were on a train that went into the Yukon in Canada so it stopped at the border for customs. I guess there was a medical emergency on the train in front of us and it got stuck at customs. The EMS services have to come from really far and they literally took forever. I have no idea about the person but I hope they are ok.
We were on the second train of the day but it was my understanding that every train ended up 60-90 minutes delayed. The pilot made an announcement after the all aboard time that we were waiting for many delayed tours. I think we left about an hour late but we do not have far to go. I assume this included at least some non-cruise excursions which I’m glad we waited for them!

I think Skagway was my favorite. It was crazy the different weather once we got to the Yukon though!
This was more of a Gold Rush town and looks currently like the most prosperous still today with the nicest buildings and homes. Unfortunately all of these ports remind me of Caribbean ports in that it’s obvious that TONS of people and money come in but doesn’t get to the right people. The poverty in Ketchikan was the most striking.

During the Gold Rush, 100,000 men came here to try and get to the Yukon to strike it rich. Canada (God love them) made a rule that they had to have 2,000lbs of goods with them in order to survive. Depending on the year some of them walked (!) and some took the train that we took. If they couldn’t afford help or a donkey, they had to carry all the stuff themselves in a supposed relay method of 100lbs a mile at a time. I’m positive I would have just jumped off a cliff.
