New Mobile Order Geofencing at Monorail Resorts?

Wdwnt reports that someone reported this to them and they have been testing

I hate this. The windows are sometimes too far out. I like to order 10-15 minutes in advance so they it’s ready when I arrive.

It seems to me that this is another symptom of Disney’s over extending themselves with resort rooms without also providing enough stuff to do.

We’ve gone from a safe happy place that families can go to for fun to limitations.

Parks don’t have to be big - make an original DL size park with copies of all the E ticket rides and space to add more. Youngest grandson suggested a smaller “stoners only” park with chill rides like Na’vi and Peter Pan.

And why don’t we have another campground?
I get that DVC is considered a cash cow. What’s not to like about a place for guests to stay that costs less to build, starts bringing in money sooner, and has a simple turnaround procedure for outgoing and in coming guests in essentially hosing down the concrete slab.

Hmm. This is new? I am almost positive we have already been geofenced there. I will try to place an order while on the monorail, but it wouldn’t let me until we actually arrived at the Contemporary. Maybe I am misremembering.

At one time I was bothered by it, but now I actually think it is a good idea. I wish they did it at all quick service locations because it helps reduce the problem of the orders being so far out since people actually have to be there to order.

I’ve noticed, for many years now a message popping up stating that ‘only resort guests are allowed to place orders’. I know I’ve seen that message at CR, especially during busy times and holidays. I just push through it if we are on our way or go to the counter when we arrive.

I just remembered. I was misremembering, kinda. It wasn’t quick service, it was to indicate we had arrived for our ADR. I couldn’t actually say we had arrived until we were in the resort lobby. Being in the monorail about to arrive wasn’t good enough

Regardless, I am actually in favor of them making this change for quick service.

However, in light of the whole DS buses discussion, I wonder if the primary reason for this change is to prevent folks from arriving at, say, the Contemporary with a mobile order in hand thinking it should get them into the resort/parking. If you can’t even place a mobile order it’ll you are there, it means that no longer becomes a possibility.

I think it ebbs and flows. Seems like they put it back in place in busier times

This completely negates the purpose of mobile ordering, though

You still don’t have to wait in line. You also minimize any social interactions. Those are still solid wins in my book.

That’s fair.

I guess I’m thinking about how if you have to be there to order, the orders will all bunch up in the same way as they do with in-person ordering.

Of course at some locations the mobile pickup area becomes a mob scene anyway

They’ve done this before, especially at the monorail resorts at busy times. Often the Contempo Cafe.

But the geofencing didn’t really work. They relied on a pop up saying “you must be at the Contemporary Resort to place an order”. But it didn’t actually prevent you ordering.

I wonder if they actually have it working now?

I would hope so. It is very basic technology, and they have been geofencing elsewhere on property for years now.

what have they geofenced elsewhere?

Every mobile order location in the parks, as well as ADR arrival locations. This has been the case for years.

The blog post states:

…. has long been in place for other elements of the My Disney Experience app, including merchandise mobile checkout and joining restaurant walk-up lists. In those cases, geofencing technology would check the approximate physical location of the user’s device to ensure they are in proximity to the shop or dining location in question.

Now, it appears the same technology is being deployed for mobile ordering at several Walt Disney World Deluxe Resorts.

Could it be that the wifi coverage is better in the parks than outside of resorts, I wonder?

I must admit on our last trip (Christmas 2022), I didn’t try mobile ordering anywhere where I wasn’t actually already there. Except for the Contempo Cafe, where I did won the path back from MK. And although the pop up appeared, it didn’t stop me actually ordering. Or maybe they just hadn’t implemented it properly?

Ah, so maybe they just hadn’t actually implemented it at the Contempo, but tried to pretend they had.

For clarity, you’ve always been able to pre-order using mobile ordering. I have often ordered our lunch, for example, on the way to the parks in the morning. But you can’t click “I’m here. Prepare my food.” Until you are within a certain range. Similarly, you can’t check in for your ADRs until within a range as well.

This is correct. You can create the order…but they won’t allow you to have them start preparing the order until you are nearby. It sounds like the only difference now is that they will be geofencing even the ability to start the order to begin with.

Yes this has been in place for a long time and seemed to have been the deterrent they were looking for. But you know how people talk on the interwebs so that’s why we can’t have nice things
