We did this recently! We were the older (60 yr old) adults with son and niece in early twenties. We hit rope drop for MK morning. I basically told the “kids” they could come, but if I got them LLs they needed to be at the parks when I said so. We skipped many of the same attractions you could skip, but keep in mind that Small World and Carousel of Progress are low wait, air conditioned and relaxing on a hot afternoon, (even conducive to napping.
) We used LL, LLSP, and Touring Plans. These enabled us to hit all the top rides, and many others, without a lot of waiting. We did Skipper’s Canteen also and loved it! The food was excellent, atmosphere relaxing, and cast members fun. We got a Beak and Barrel reservation around 3:00 p.m. and shared the apps and a drink. Our energy did start to lag so we wandered around the slow rides (people mover) and shops and continued snacking when the impulse struck us. It was kind of like taking an in-park-break. Dole whip and egg roll cart snacks and mickey ice creams took the place of a real dinner and we watched the parade and fireworks/projection show. We decided to head back to the resort after the fireworks, but none of us were totally wiped out. Another suggestion is to keep the Skipper Canteen Lunch and try to get a Wailulu dinner. If you can’t get reservation, don’t give up. We got a same day “walk in” with little wait. We relaxed around the Poly and and found the Wailulu patio beautiful and relaxing, and food quite good. This is another way to sneak a little “break” into your day. We are not especially fit or big exercisers in real life and could hardly believe how many steps we walked int WDW. I think you can do it!
What an awesome day! I am so impressed, and thank you for sharing! We actually just decided to splurge on the fireworks dessert party. Never did it before, and will never do it again. However, because the fireworks are a priority for the gf and therefore my son, I decided it might be worth making it a highlight of the trip. This will allow us to stroll up to the viewing area at 9:30 or so, watch, have desserts and drinks from 10:20 until the parade comes around, grab an easy parade spot and then leave at the end. It will be a low key way to end the day with no lining up, rushing and jockeying. This may make it easier to stay in the park all day if we want to. I know it is not “worth it” for the desserts, etc., so it feels kind of strange to be doing it, but for this instance and this group I actually think it could be special.
We had lunch at Wailulu on our last trip, and I thought it was great. If we decide not to break at the hotel, this is an option, but now that I added the dessert party we will probably grab something quick. Glad you loved Skipper. Excited for my first time there! I love doing something new each trip. Any recommendations?
I am glad the “kids” cooperated by making it into the park for the LLs. I am hoping we have the same fortune. That is certainly the key to a good day and a good trip! If you have any other tips for traveling with young adults bring them on! ![]()
The relaxing vibe of the dessert party sounds great. The worst part of fireworks is having to stake out the spot! Re. Skipper’s Canteen, the main advice I have is to ask not to be seated in the Mess Hall, which is exactly like it sounds. The other dining rooms are well themed and much quieter. I had noodles that were sort of an inauthentic, but very tasty, Pad Thai. My son loved his steak. The four of us all enjoyed what we ordered and giggled at the silly jokes. It is not the highest end food on property, but we enjoyed it. It was really nice to relax and have a nice meal in MK.
My strategy with the young adults was to ask, very clearly, in advance, for them to get up early and get to the parks so we could enjoy so many more attractions than we would otherwise. I promised that other than that I would be very flexible. Then I tried to chill out and be flexible about everything else. I waited in line for character meets, because my niece wanted to meet Ariel and didn’t complain when they stayed in the room on their illuminated gadgets instead of exploring the resort. We were in parks 7 days and I did let everyone sleep in one morning after our long MK day! But they were really great and I think did see how beneficial the early mornings were. I hope you post a trip report later!
The kids’ screen use on vacation drives me nuts …
I recently joked that Disney was opening a new park where the whole park would be filled with iPads for kids to use all day. DS8 excitedly said “REALLY?”
And it would wind up being Disney’s first $300 a day park!
