Why would you steer a man wrong Ike that?!
You like Mikeās best? Is this going to be a sandwich/bar situation?
Interesting - Iāve never cared to see local things on our cruises. I can see what you are saying. Organized excursions can really lock you in.
Absolutely
(And Team Sandwich)
@ryan1 sorry to hear your MIL isnāt well and your wife was not able to board with you. Iāve just (kind of) caught up and it seems you are having a good time , even if it would be better with her there. Didnāt realize you were hitting Boston this weekend - we rolled out the best of our weather for you! It was a stunner!
Maybe we should have gotten one from Mikeās AND Modern Pastry to do a comparison taste test. Too late. Maybe next time.
My friends said that last time they were in Boston, they got Mikeās. They felt the cannoli from Modern Pastry was definitely better. So, I am afraid @OBNurseNH is just wrong, perhaps. ![]()
Thanks. It has been so weird being on this cruise without my wife here. I constantly feel like a part of me is missing. On our Portland day, for example, just taking the tour bus and passing all the colorful trees, I couldnāt help but think, āMarsha should be here to see this.ā
It doesnāt help that she was the one who originated the idea of doing a New England/Canada cruise to begin with!
I greatly prefer the flavor of Modern. My city has the second Modern location and they are my favorite. Mikes has been increasing their locations (airport opened last week). Mikes seem much larger and that is always a good thing.
Thatās what we did with bagels in NYC. Iāll have to remember this for cannolis next time weāre in Boston.
One thing I wanted to share which I was impressed with this cruise.
As you all likely know, RC does a different theme night in main dining. And the food has been quite excellent. But two nights ago was A Taste of the USA. I got the fried chicken feast. And it was awful. Nothing about it even came close to what anyone in the in the USA would expect for a fried chicken dinner. In fact, I took two bites and just couldnāt stomach any more if it. I tried a third anyway, but left the rest uneaten. Also, the menu said fried potato wedges, which makes sense. But instead, we got roasted sweet potato spears. They were okay, but not at all what one associates with a fried chicken feast, nor what the menu said.
Our server, Karen (who is fabulous, by the way), noticed and offered to bring me something else. I declined because I wasnāt very hungry anyhow, after the bread and starter. But she wanted to know what I didnāt like, and then wanted me to wait to speak to the head waiter about it. I explained to him why it was, to me, a very bad dish, and he of course apologetic. He actually offered me something as a consolation for the next, which I declined. I said I wasnāt really looking for any compensation or anything, only that they should know it was not a good dish.
In the end, I felt like they were taking the complaint very seriously. The next day, I was talking to Karen more about it and said that since most passengers are from the USA, and are very familiar with a good fried chicken dinner, it would definitely be something RC should be getting right. She said that they take the feedback to heart because most of the cooks in the ship are Asian and donāt really understand American flavors. (Her words, not mineā¦she is African herself⦠Zimbabwe I believe.)
Apart from that, though, the food that I have had from the main dining room has been quite excellent all around. A solid 8 out of 10.
ETA: The online menu DOES say roasted sweet potato wedges, so I donāt know if it was a menu misprint or whatā¦
You must have finally passed through the worm holeā¦
What does RC have against chcolate chip cookies? They have sugar, oatmeal raisin, sugar free lemonā¦but not chocolate chip! Why?!?
I also felt that Princess was stingy on the chocolate chips!
On day one, they had chocolate chip muffins, and I was like cool! I can enjoy those this week. We are on day 6, and they have never had them again. ![]()
Have you seen the price of chocolate chips lately?
Rationing! My kids have learned that if you see the Fruit Loops or Frosted Flakes out early in the sailing you take them because it will be Cheerios and Wheaties on Day 7!
Not too much. At Aldi we pay about $3.60 for a bag of chips. But I donāt know if that is significantly higher or not, since I havenāt paid too much attention.
What I have noticed is that it is next to impossible to find actual white chcolate chips now. I used to buy Ghirardelli white chcolate, but even they have switched to āwhite baking chipsā which is code for NOT white chocolate! When you can find them, the price is ridiculous. Which is sad because I like to make several dessert recipes using white chocolate.
Mission āacquire chocolate chip cookiesā accomplished!
Still nothing in Cafe Promenade, but if, later in the evening, you go all the way to the very back of the Windjammer, they MAY have some.
I love chocolate chip cookies but that one looks like a store bought one. Hope Iām wrong and it actually tastes good.
