Kawaii to Hawaii: Universal Japan, ABD Japan, Tokyo Disneyland, Club Med Hokkaido, & Aulani - A Trip Report

I had a delicious espresso martini in the lovely hotel bar with our free drink coupon from the tour last night.

Dinner last night was really good with a mix of Japanese and western food but I really was full from lunch still which was large and filling. The Geiko-son (more experienced Geiko I believe) was interesting. She was beautiful as her dress but it’s hard for me to except some of the sexism in the older traditions such as her teachers are all male, she cannot marry, etc. It is her choice of course but still just doesn’t sit well. I also learned that in Kabuki theater females are not allowed to perform for 600+ years. Still! Tradition is one thing but I am actually glad the performances didn’t fit into our schedule because I don’t know if I want to support that. Some interesting facts I learned about Geiko (aka Geisha in the states) is that it means performance person in Geisha and performance girl in Geiko. They dress less flowery and colorful as they age and eventually stop wearing the white makeup and fancy hair at about 40yo. They never stop training. There is an 90 year old Geiko still living and she still trains. The reason they get plainer as they get older is because they are so talented at that point they do not need pretty clothes or makeup/hair to gain attention. They are not allowed to visit modern stores like Starbucks. They can only go to old fashioned markets. Also, I’m gonna try and rewatch Memoirs of a Geisha and The Last Samurai based on our travels yesterday as we visited in Arashiyama some of the filming locations of the The Last Samurai.

Today, I woke up at 5:27am today naturally. Part of the problem is the light coming in the window that early (I also woke up at 12am, 1am and 2am cuz of my stupid phone vibrating from calls….tonight I’ll put on do not disturb but also having had emergencies I hate to do that). Today is going to be our longest day having breakfast at 7am and leaving right after at 7:45am and not returning till 10-1030pm as we are going to Hiroshima which is very far away but we’re going by bullet train:

The lunch place is based on my own online research so hopefully we get there as lunch is on your own. Miyajima is known for their oysters so it’s an oyster place. They do have other things because mom is allergic to mollusks (not shrimp or lobster but scallops, clams, oysters). And DD does not like fish.

individual tastes and is filled with choices that include meat, noodles, vegetables, or any
combination of these ingredients. The dish is so beloved by the people of Hiroshima, there are
over 2,000 Okonomiyaki restaurants in the region.
:train2: Shinkansen Train to Kyoto
Take a Shinkansen train back to Kyoto.

I am not taking photos cuz they are and other family members are and they are all better at it and it’s more of an interest for them so once they put them in the shared album or I get them from ABD I’ll come back and add them near the appropriate post.

Also we’re playing a game for most hidden mickeys found and most unique hidden Mickey found. I’ve been told the prizes are good and adults are more serious than the kids. (There are lots of kids, mostly teens but at least one 9 and one 11yo). Here is how creative I’m getting; we’ll see if it counts.

Rules are they have to be taken on trip and you can’t visit a Disneystore but if someone outside of a Disney story has one (like I do on my suitcase and backpack) it’s game.

Also playing this game makes my ADHD rage because I cannot pay attention to the guides cuz I want to win and am constantly scanning the environment. Lol. She said on a previous tour someone said they needed to take this trip again cuz they spent the whole time focussed on Hidden Mickeys so I’ll try not to be that person but….ha ha

I promise more pics are coming.

Also daughter took our ABD room and I took the extra room I booked (cheaper to do this than book single occupancy thru ABD by a lot!!!). Same category but up she won the best view award

Whose is whose? Lol

Parents room has another garden view but the dry garden (zen rock garden where they rake it) and DMIL has same view as DD. So ABD hooked it up. Also we’re all on same floor but not connecting or adjoining.

Bullet train is immaculate and extremely comfortable. Large clean bathroom (but no soap just like the public restrooms yesterday. Also found this to be true in China).

Why can’t planes give us this much legroom and footrests like this and if we could please build these in America I’d choose this Everytime.

So the restaurant i researched is closed (though it’s not supposed to be. Only supposed to be closed on Wednesday. It had the famous oysters of Hiroshima plus other things for those that are allergic like my mom and those that don’t like seafood like my daughter) So we did an emergency
image
And the third best place on yelp with only 18 reviews only has oysters (didn’t want to do 2nd best cuz it’s the kind of food we’re doing for dinner)
So two of us are only have lemon soda. (The other thing Hiroshima is known for).

Some early morning exhausted overall thoughts. It’s outrageously hot and the pacing of the tour in that heat is a lot. I’m a go go person and let’s stay active. I’m also a Texan and very used to heat and I travelled to a China in August or 2018 and thru the Grand Canyon in 2019 and those were both hot trips. I’m middle aged but i workout 1-2 hours 6 days a week including HIIT and swimming laps for 2 miles straight. I feel like I should be able to handle this but I’m also feeling exhausted. I would suggest doing it in a cooler season but for ABD I think shoulder season is adult only. I’m really starting to worry about ABD Italy next August.

I almost did ABD China but when I realized I could stay twice as long in 4/5 star hotels, and do most of the same things plus some for the same price I didn’t. There is something about being able to control the pace and giving yourself sleep in days. There are no sleep in days here from what I can tell. But this could also be the jet lag talking so I’ll come back at the end and see if I still feel like I’d prefer to do it myself, stay longer, and go at a more relaxed pace when it’s all over but right now I’m kinda wishing I did that.

I was able to sleep in more today. The key was to close the blackout curtains and to put my phone on do not disturb (with the exception of my kids which is a neat feature that you can whitelist people).

Breakfast is supposed to be right now (7am) but our we do have a slightly later start of 8:30am instead of 7:45am so I haven’t mosied down there yet.

Yesterday was physically and mentally demanding. While Miyajima island and the temple there are really neat. It was way too hot. It made me feel sick a little. I did feel better when I took off my tshirt and just went around in my tank top so get as naked as possible. I’ll add some photos later but it was definitely a very Japanese cultural and beautiful experience.

For lunch, The oysters here are so much bigger than what I’ve seen in the states and I tried them something like 5 ways. I mostly enjoyed them fried and the salad with the oyster oil dressing. In an oyster rice was probably next and there was some kind of sauced oyster that was great. Steamed was not bad but my least favorite. The lemon drinks were also very good and appreciated in the heat. (Hiroshima is known for three things: oysters, lemons and brushes like paint and makeup brushes made from squirrel).

The peace park and memorial museum while incredibly moving are mentally draining. I was so engrossed and only made it not even a 1/4-1/3 of the way in the hour they gave us that I was late and they were all waiting for me. I had no idea of the time and I looked up and recognized no one around me. An hour is not enough and this is probably one of those things I would have dedicated more time to if I had done this myself.

I don’t really have words. It’s horrific and with every ounce of my heart and soul do I hope there is never another nuclear bomb used. Also I wish we could just get over this whole war thing. I can’t even really write about it without tearing up but I think it’s important to think about and talk about as well.

Japan had enlisted 12-16 year old students during the war to help do things like tear down buildings to prevent the spread of fire. Our guide stated about 10,000 of them died in WWII and 6,000 in Hiroshima. The stories and images and videos and their things like clothing and lunch boxes with food inside they never ate, I can’t really say more but it’s something we should study and let sink in.

They’ve done recent studies and they claim that there is no residual radiation in the area anymore but the total deaths related to Hiroshima Little Boy bomb is over 340,000 at this point including those that suffered their whole lives with radiation related illnesses or were born with them.

Okay, gonna flip to dinner somehow. It was okonomiyaki and it’s good. But it was indoors with no a/c after a physically and mentally hard day. I started to feel pain in my neck like muscle cramps and had to take an aleve but I’m glad we got to try it. This would probably have been something I would have to tried to find an a/c’d indoor place to eat or even outdoors where there is at least a breeze. To be sitting into front one a hot teppan style grill radiating extreme heat indoors with no a/c is not for me! Lol. I’ll add photos later of all of this. I need to wrap up thoughts and get to today! Lol.

The train ride home I feel asleep in spurts. I get cold when I’m tired so I went from hot at the restaurant to freezing on the train so pack a sweater if you’re inclined just for the train. We left at 7:45am (with breakfast at 7am) and returned at 10:30pm. I think Hiroshima is worth visiting and the fast train is neat. However, I would have done this differently if it were me planning. I would have probably started my tour in Hiroshima and spent a night or two and then taken the fast train one direction to Kyoto instead of making it a day trip.

Today shall be lighter so hopefully I won’t feel so exhausted tomorrow morning and I’ll take back some of what I’m saying:

The plan (though dinner is on our own and the place I listed was something I chose that doesn’t take reservations so we might pivot again if we are inclined. DD16 keeps begging me for McDonalds. Lol)

Also we were supposed to do a boat ride instead of the water temple tour but one capsized and two died in March and it’s been closed since. I’m not super happy with its replacement. A boat ride sounds cooler (temp wise and neat wise) than another temple personally being pretty active traveler and it’s a nice change of pace. Plus that costs money and the water temple is free so I feel a little shortchanged with Disney’s substitution. You can walk to this temple from the hotel and on the previous itinerary that’s exactly what they suggested you do during down time or on your first day. So again a little disappointed. Not gonna lie.

Audible called. It’s storming and 16yos miss food they are familiar with. Gonna eat at the Italian place in the Hyatt (which has gluten free pasta for mom!).

Also the water temple is gorgeous. It was hot but it was shorter than yesterday so much more manageable. Still wish I could have been on a boat (with my flippy floppies)

Bento box lunch was fun and I loved the people and location. Super authentic feeling. The food was just okay but that’s not the point of cute food!

The taiko drumming however was my favorite thing we’ve done yet. I mean I loved it. Get all the negative energy out. I walked out of there in a rejuvenated mood despite the fatigue and heat. I’ve been reborn! There are tons of photos on OPs phones. Lol. I’m really bad at being a photographer.
