I turned 40 last year and was talking with DH about taking a “bucket list” trip for that, but then we kinda realized that we already take all the trips that we want! So I didn’t take a special trip for my 40th but I did take a cruise and go to Europe within the year.
I think that this isn’t quite a true characterization. It’s not THAT cold. And they don’t quite put the markets in alleyways. Nuremberg is out in the main square that’s pretty accessible and the children’s Christmas market exceeded every one of our expectations.
You asked about suggestions and London was pretty high on our list. Lots of different options depending on what you want to do. @gingerSnaps543222 is surely making me miss Scotland though!
I think there are a bunch of liners that would love to make a big fuss over you for a future big birthday! Could be a fun reason for another epic liner meet!!??
The more annoying thing about visiting the Christmas markets with kids is that they only take place BEFORE Christmas, so you have to take them out of school. But during the week the “crowds” were very reasonable. Lots of live entertainment and good food! Plus have you seen what German public swimming pools are like??
I know. That’s why I said VA Beach. It’s close. And often we don’t do sightseeing where we live.
When relatives and friends visited we discovered quite a lot of interesting places. One example: I live less than 90 minutes from a Christopher Wren church.
Yes - Smith Mtn. I have a friend whose in-laws do a family reunion there every year. They it.
I have multiple favorite trips because we take different kinds of trips and comparing them is apples to oranges. Given your stated constraints, I have a few suggestions, in no particular order:
London, including WB Harry Potter Studios tour and a least one show on the West End. This one obviously requires walking. Is it too much? idk
Beachfront condo in St Thomas (not all-inclusive, but with kitchen and on-site restaurant) with fantastic snorkeling and scuba diving (dive shop on-site) https://www.secretharbourvi.com/
St. Lucia resort (all inclusive, family friendly) https://cbayresort.com/ This is the first international destination we took our kids to, and they LOVED IT. They still ask to go back. The resort itself is a little shabby in places, but we liked it anyway, and the excursions available are super fun. Drive-in volcano with mud bath, swimming in a waterfall, the best zipline EVER (through the rainforest, excellent safety record (I checked)), and plenty of snorkeling.
So I think this is part of why I’m torn. It feels like I should do something that otherwise DH would say hell no to (wdw comes to mind) or at least say no thanks to (christmas markets).
It’s also a reason I’m being mean to myself about even thinking through this. Like, go get some real worries, girl.
You’ve done enough of that for 2024 — no need to find new ones.
There are not enough times in your life when you can choose just what you want to do. I’m sure everyone who loves you would want you to pick what you like.
I would do the Christmas markets! It sounds so fun and it’s what you’ve always wanted to do. Ultimately, it should be something you want to do; it’s your birthday after all! I think doing a trip your DH might not be as found as sounds like a good plan too. You don’t want to (have to) miss him on your trip!
Um, y’all. The next batch of DCL itineraries just dropped and there’s a 10 night NEW ZEALAND cruise over Christmas next year. Holy buckets. Like, leaves from Auckland and goes to: * Tauranga, New Zealand
If I could somehow get DH two weeks at Christmas that would absolutely be the trip. But he is usually required to work either Christmas or New Year’s week. Hmmmm
Can he give up Thanksgiving, Super Bowl weekend and whatever else to make that happen? That would be a fabulous way to celebrate your 40th (a few weeks after the real one).
