Disney Visa Card

Signed up for a Disney Visa to get the $200 GC + $200 reward and plan on cancelling the card. Does anyone (@JJT ?) know if I have to wait a specific amount of time after receiving the reward before cancelling the card?

Honestly not sure how that is handled these days. I did the very same thing several years ago with a Disney Visa card you are doing now. Ended up cancelling it before one year of ownership. But I did wait and use it for miscellaneous expenses during our WDW visit as it had some special discounts for doing that at the time. My suggestion would be to read all the fine print and ā€œfootnotesā€ that come with the card terms, and perhaps on their web site (if you have that access) to verify the misc stuff & timing that fits your trip plans. I’m glad I used that card at the time. Good luck.

At least a year from opening. If you got a card with an annual fee, wait for fee to hit next year then ask to close it - they will refund fee.

Never want to close a credit card before 1 year, banks do not like that, federal credit rules etc. plus, if it is a no annual fee card, I’d just keep it open until the next time you want to go for the bonus. (You can do that every 24 months from the last time your BONUS hit, not from the date card was opened.)

Thank you! I didn’t realize the one-year guideline, that’s good to know.
If I just kept it open, and then wanted to go for another bonus do I have to then cancel the card and reapply? Is there usually a wait time between cancelling and reapplying?

Yes, you’d do exactly that, waiting a week or three should allow the bank system to realize you don’t hold the card anymore, but after the first year you can cancel anytime so you could give yourself more time to be conservative if you like.

Back before I played the larger points game I churned the Disney card multiple times and even reapplied within a day and it worked , but I wouldn’t recommend.

Also, be aware you can play this in two player mode with a partner or friend:

  • You (P1) apply, get bonus and card
  • Generate your referral link, partner (P2) uses to apply: gets bonus and you get referral $.
  • 24 months after bonus P1 cancels card, uses P2 referral link, P1 gets bonus, P2 gets referral $.
  • 24 months after P2 bonus they use P1 referral, get bonus and referral $.

The maximum play is usually to get the Premium card for the bonuses even though it has annual fee because larger bonus offsets the fee.

Not worth paying the annual fee in year 2 because you need to spend a lot of $ to earn enough points to offset without a bonus, so after year 1 you downgrade card to the no fee version.

When you go for a new bonus 24 months later, lather, rinse, repeat with the Premium card.

Thanks for all this information, it’s super helpful. I’m obviously new to this ā€˜game’ :joy:
I’ve tried delving into the thread but it’s super overwhelming, so I’m gonna stick with the small stuff for now.
