Super quick thumbnail of the hotel costs on this trip:

I booked a 2 queen studio suite on the Amex Platinum travel portal. The Hotel Saranac is in The Hotel Collection (THC), one step down from the Fine Hotels and Resorts (FHR) locations.

To get the Platinum perks you need to book a single night for FHR hotels and 2 nights in THC.
In previous years, I booked a 1-night stay at Spruce Peak, in Stowe, VT, which is an FHR resort.

The Platinum card now gets a $300 credit in the portal every 6 months.

THC Perks:

  • Upgrade to the next level room in the category you booked (if available)
  • Early noon check in (if available)
  • Late 4PM check out (you guessed it: if available)
  • $100 location credit

Also, in both of these bougier collections your rewards program is handed off to the booking and does earn points - unlike typical 3rd party bookings. So, my Diamond status got me $30/day in food and beverage credits.

At this location, they only allowed using the $100 credit for food and bev as well - which was fine for us as the hotel’s CampFire restaurant was absolutely terrific for breakfast.

Booking that “lower” end suite gave us the chance of an upgrade to a higher suite. The “studio suite” was really just an elongated room as far as I could tell.

So, I expected we might get bumped up to the Deluxe suite, which had a lot more room and a sort of L-configuration with separate sleep and living spaces. But, we were double-bumped (ooh, baby) up to the Superior, which you can see in my photos from the previous post.

Long Story Long

How did the cost work out - we paid almost $700 for the basic suite and earned $460 in credits, giving us a net total of $238 for the 2 night stay.

The Superior suite would have cost us $1,178 for the 2 nights, so a very nice return on spend.

And we used that $160 in food credits for many amazing omelettes and ginormous pancakes.

I think Disney could take the same advice about not lying to customers. It’s so annoying when you get an answer from a CM that you know is total BS. Or they omit basic facts that would be very helpful. “Frozen Ever After is having a delayed opening this morning” would be great to hear before I cross into Mexico.

(I know CMs don’t always have all the info but that’s on Disney to figure out a way to get the word out.)
