Current DL Night Shows: Can I do this?

I’m trying to do as many shows as possible in a 3 day, 2 night trip. I tried to have chat GPT figure it out and it came up with the following:
Night 1: Paint the Night (8:30) → Fantasmic dining package (9:00) → Fireworks from Rivers of America (9:30). Optional late shows.

Night 2: World of Color (9:00) → optional fireworks hop (9:30)

I know the later parade would be better, but my kids are school aged, so I’m not sure they’ll stay awake! Can I realistically get from the parade (near the hub) to Fantasmic (I have a Rancho dining package) in about 7 minutes? I don’t see any other options.

What date are you looking at?

sept 12

I am not the pro that our DLR frequent visitors are, but I see the main difficulty in going upstream from the crowds, at times.

I hope @lolabear_la @Wahoohokie @Julianne_fki chime in soon.

My first thought is you will need to be prepared that you’ll have paid for the dining package to have them tell you to find a spot at the back of a standby section wherever they might have space or be told they have no space arriving late.

For the show dining packages, DL will not guarantee space if you show up later than the show start and they may even have verbiage on the pass they give you at the dining location that states you need to be at the section 30 min in advance for them to honor your reserved space.

The entrance for the dining package is across from the Haunted Mansion exit all the way on the opposite side of the River form the hub. And you’d be navigating a park with the parade moving through it and closed walkways with traffic flow being re-routed. So you’re looking at it taking on the longer side of 7-10 minutes to move around.

Then, the parade starts up by it’s a small world so even watching at the closest point to Rivers of America (the hub), you’ll have to wait at least 10 min for the parade to reach the hub AND then it will be another 20 minutes for it to pass so even though you would have the 5 min walk from there, you will NOT make it to Fantasmic before it starts AND be able to get to watch the full parade.

You can watch closer to the start of the parade (I can point out an area where you can try to look for a spot for the best chance to jump up from the parade & be in position to huff it over to the far side of ROA, BUT even that walk will take 10 min alone so you’re still likely not making it to the viewing area in time for the show to start, let alone before they’re willing to accommodate helping you find a spot within the reserved dining section).

I would pick which one out of Paint the Night or Fantasmic to prioritize seeing earlier & and then use that optional late show either night to slot in the other.

Both are good options.

If you choose Paint the Night first, you will have to camp out for 45 min at least for a spot to see the parade AND be in a spot you can watch fireworks or easily maneuver to a good fireworks viewing location. I personaly would watch the parade from somewhere near it’s a small world and watch fireworks on the facade. Alternatively you can watch from Town Square and move up to the end of Main St once the parade passes. But you will be a salmon swimming upstream going the absolute wrong way & having to make a left turn to get to Fantasmic to get there. So even though I like watching projections the most from Main St. I would not pick it if my next move is Fantasmic.

Then for later Fantasmic you will need to cancel the earlier dining package and either try to standby late Fantasmic (which shouldn’t be an issue). OR you can look for availability for dinner at Rancho with a dining package for the later show. On the later Fantasmic dining package, if they don’t have a huge population of dining package reservations, they may combine the sections so you’ll be more center if you do this. But Fantasmic is in a very dark corner of the park so that is easily the one show that if we do late my younger kids are sleeping through.

Alternatively, you can keep your dining package, but instead of squeezing in the parade, settle into your dining package spot to watch Fantasmic and then fireworks immediately after from the same location. Then get a spot in Town Square for the 10:30 parade. The parade will start from this end for the later show and you’ll be right next to the park exit, so you can be on your way out the door just as soon as it passes. And if your kids easily made it though the earlier Fantasmic & fireworks, will more likely be engaged for the parade and with a quicker exit if at any point you just need to call it and leave.

I would def not do that. I would opt for the later parade or give it up. Sometimes you have a better time if you enjoy less. Something that’s been hard for me to learn! I also would not try to make the fireworks after WoC as it’s 25 min long. It works better in reverse since the fireworks are shorter and the second WoC starts at 10:15 I believe if you’re willing to do the later WoC but it sounds like that not an option for your kiddos.

personally I’d choose Fantasmic and world of color every time over fireworks because I can count more the amount of times I staked out a castle fireworks view for 1-3 hours and get no show or a broken show. I’ve never had that problem with Fantasmic and World of Color and I prefer the shows to the parades but this is a good parade.

I looked up OP’s specific dates on the entertainment calendar because when we were considering going to DL earlier this summer, I noticed some of the times were different than I was used to for shows (like the parade has always always always been 8:45 but now is 8:30), so I wanted to make sure I knew the timings and what options existed for late shows. And I noticed that WOC is only 9:00pm for their dates :frowning:

We have made it with the 4 kids and a double stroller from the back of the WoC viewing section closest to the Little Mermaid building (leaving just as the final notes are playing and before it’s all the way over) and made it to the back of Town Square within the first few moments of the fireworks show. So it is possible BUT it’s also like you said, a perfect example of how it’s a better time to enjoy less. Like we didn’t get to really appreciate the closing mement or the song they play after for the crowd to filter out of WOC and then missed the opening notes/first firework of the show. And those little details are definitely more a part of the enjoyment than you realize until you’re running around missing them.

Hi folks-

I’m on a call with @linsalt going over some questions raised by y’all about the touring plans.

We’re currently discussing how much time in advance folks need to arrive for Disneyland’s Fantasmic.

The current setting in the plans is 45 minutes ahead.

We can increase that number if needed; in Hollywood Studios, for example, it’s 60 for Fantasmic.

If we can get a consensus on what that number should be, I’m happy to change it. Let me know, please.

This assume no Fastpass / dining and you are finding standby?

45 minutes seems reasonable to me. However I am the type who will either get a dining package or show up at the last minute and squeeze into a spot with a horrible view.

@lolabear_la may know better.

Over the years Fantasmic has either been a campout in masses of people for 60+ min or going for last minute back of the section (terrible) views in the last 20-30 minutes before showtime. For the 10:30 show it’s a lot easier to do but for the 9pm you need to get there with at least 15 min left before the show IMO. You could maybe push it closer on low crowd days they happen to run the show.

We stopped doing either of the above because the bad views mean we’ll be holding a kid at some point and our backs just don’t love that and haven’t for the last 6-7 yrs so we quit showing up later to the back. And the other option, crammed in with the masses for 60+ min isn’t our idea of fun.

So since 2018 we’ve just always done a dining package to see the show.

I think now 45 min. is sufficient (because Paint the Night is the bigger draw between the 2 especially without a Murphy in F!), but I also think that the plans should reflect some logic knowing that with a dining package you have to be there 30 minutes before, or you’re late and may not be admitted to the reserved section. And if standby is also full, you’re turned away entirely.

Also more accurately reflect the transition and walking times between the parade at that time. Because looking at it on paper the parade start at 8:30 with a 23 min runtime, that leaves 7 min to do the 5-6 min walk to Fantasmic. But the reality is the 8:30 parade is only over in 23 minutes if you watch at the start and you have more like a 10 min walk to Fantasmic from the edge of the parade and then you’re late.

I don’t know the answer to @len question. It is so crowded there, that since they’ve brought the show back, I do a dining package. It’s just worth it to not worry about finding a spot if you don’t get there early.

There are separate settings for using LL and “standby” - good point. Right now we have them both at 45 minutes.
