Definitely going to be people going 100% shenanigans as soon as they get a credit to see if book and cancel will push them.
Linking over to my response in the dedicated SW bag change thread just so its available here too…
Just closed my Jetblue credit card today. The airline is too unreliable and I won’t put up with their repeated delays anymore. The last straw was when they canceled our flight out to Florida out of LGA bc snow the prior day. Most other carriers were unaffected.
Lesson: before signing up with an airline credit card, check their cancellation% and delayed% out of your airports.
I signed up for a Delta Gold Skymiles instead. The card is meh but the airline’s reliable!
Several nice offers appeared on Amex cards this week - including this spend $200 get $50 back at Lowes, which is phenomenal. This time it showed up on ALL THREE of my business cards (BB Plus, Hilton Biz and Biz Gold) - so I’m thinking I’m finally going to sign up for Cardpointers so I can get these deals added to all of my cards instead of just one or two.
(For those who are unaware: Lowes sells gift cards and they credit on these offers.) Remember, you have to enroll/add offers to your card before you use them these have to be added by 3/21.
I believe once enrolled in this offer you have until the end of March to use it.
Frequent Miler has a decent rundown of using CardPointers here.
They have an affiliate link on that post for discounted annual or lifetime costs - but I Googled around a little I saw the CP author posted a link in reddit that has a little better discount. ($43/year or $144 Lifetime.)
Considering by using Cardpointers would get me all 3 Lowes deals on my cards and save me $150 on just those, I’m kind of leaning towards going Lifetime. Over the long haul, assuming CP continues to be around, that could be a lucrative long term membership.
It looks like the AMEX Lowes offer is only on certain cards.
Many of these offers are targeted to some users and not others, so is usually a check to see if you have them situation.
These particular Lowes seem to be tied to business cards each time they appear. This is the 3rd time they have showed up for me since last Fall, first time on all 3 of my biz cards.
One thing that’s great about Amex is the flyers they send for their cards. I got business blue and business platinum last year the normal way.
In the last two months, I have gotten flyers for both of those cards saying I was pre approved and have gotten both cards again. I was planning on keeping my original platinum so great I can cancel the original soon and now have the new one and get 175k in points
Wow, I’ve had the regular Plat for years now and have never received a no lifetime language offer for another one!
I know they do that for the Biz Plat a lot, but I haven’t gotten one of those yet because the spend is painful. Might get one this year if there’s a good offer when I have to pay for a large yard project.
I still get offers for more Blue Biz Plus cards, but since BBPlus I got, they’ve only sent offers that weren’t a great points/spend combo.
Yeah, the spend is rough. Timing worked out with redoing our kids room.
Oh boy, my reading comprehension this morning is terrible.
I thought you said you got a regular Plat NLL offer.
off to make more coffee
One thing in the points and cash back world I have sillily shirked on are Target Circle bonuses.
My DW has always tended to shop at Target more than I (and now DD, whose best shopping option is a Target / CVS combo near her college.) But, after the Sears in the mall next to my office closed and the building languished for 6 or 7 years - they opened a Target!*
Travel on Points has a good run down on buying gift cards at Target when you have a Circle Bonus to maximize your returns.
Right now I have a “Spend $50 twice and get $15 Reward” that I’m going to work on.
Assuming I use the $15 reward on things I was going to buy anyway (which is easy) and I attribute all of the savings to the offer:
If I buy two $50 Disney gift cards (in two transactions) I’ll:
- Save 5% by using my Target card = $5 off.
- Get $15 in Target Circle Rewards
- Total Value: $115
- Total Cost: $95
- Total Percent Off: 17.4%
*Nerdy aside: My favorite part of that location is it is a 3-floor location and they installed a super neat shopping cart conveyer. When you want to change floors, you drive your cart into the cartveyor and it takes it own ride next to you on the escalator.
This is a timely post! I need a few things from Target.
Cool logistics!!
And maybe an idea for a new theme park ride
That’s a good one!
My second Circle offer right now is to join Target 360 at a discount, which probably isn’t something I would even join for free.
I just happened to see it when I went to gift cards. Didn’t know everyone got different things.
Yes, as I understand it the offers rotate so worth checking once in awhile.
FYI: I was just updating some of my links in the credit card referral sheet and noticed a couple of yours (the SW card and DVisa) seem to be coming up as Offer Not Available, so you may want to regenerate those and update them!
COMING SOON to a Bank Near You!
Without getting too far into the weeds here: the Sapphire Preferred is known as the gateway card to the Chase Ultimate Rewards ecosystem.
For a $95 annual fee you get access to airline and hotel transfer partners for better value with your earned UR - and you get a $50 card year (not calendar year) hotel credit when you book a hotel through the Chase portal.*
Most days, the Sapphire Preferred (and Reserve) have had 60K UR sign up bonuses.
Word on the street is that there is currently a live offer IN CHASE BRANCHes for a new 100K SUB. Also: the online version of this offer should appear by April 3rd. Often, but not always, personal referral links may follow if you refresh them after some point in time, maybe a few weeks if the offer lasts.
Note: Many cards have a 24 month rule: i.e. you cannot earn a bonus for the same card if you have already earned one within the last 24 months. (Clock starts at bonus earn, NOT card open.) HOWEVER: The Sapphire cards have a 48 month rule.
So, if your last Sapphire bonus was earned more than 48 months ago or you have not stepped into the swift and lucractive Ultimate Rewards waters, now (or soon) may be a good time to consider opening a card.
*I am told there are hacks to earning this annual credit without actually keeping the pesky portal reservation you booked.
Thanks! I thought I just redid those too.
Thanks! Been waiting for this.
A note to the Target post. I have had a couple instances where if I purchase the gift cards online, it won’t count it as a purchase towards the bonus. We have gone to just purchasing the gift cards in store with something else to make it not look like a gift card only purchase.
