Carousel of Progress updates

I’ve been seeing reports in various outlets about updates to CoP which extend beyond adding Walt. I’m hoping the rumors are true. I LOVE CoP (must do every time for us), but it is a bit long in the tooth in terms of the content. Having it updated will be a welcome change. So long as they don’t replace the fact that “There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow…”

Here’s an official post about this. It closes starting July 6. They expect it to reopen in 2027 - but no mention of exactly when that year.

Ah, cool! I didn’t realize there was an actual official announcement about the new updates! That’s great news.

I’m a little surprised they are starting in the 60s. But…I’m down for it. The original, when created, only went back so far to show what was, at the time, relatively recent progress. So, moving it forward seems in the same vein. We can see the kind of progress that has been made in the past 60 years!!! Which is a lot. Plus, there is the nostalgia factor at play. When the original was created and showing, plenty of folks were alive to “remember when” things were like that. But today, they are showing an era that almost no-one directly has experience any longer.

Starting in the 60s means we are back to having that “remember when” feeling about things. (And, I’m excited about that. My favorite thing about the Stranger Things show, for example, was the sense of nostalgia of portraying what it was like in the 80s, which was my youth.)

We have the Henry Ford Museum near us, and there is a section which shows various items from the various decades, and I love just looking at the things that were so common place when I was young which aren’t even a thing any longer!

This announcement just came out this morning. I agree that bringing the times forward can do a lot for making them more relatable for more people.

This is actually stressing me out a bit. This has a lot of nostalgia for me and I’m worried they won’t get it right.

I hear you. As I said, I love CoP. I have since I was young, and still do.

And, normally, I’d be nervous about it. But in light of some of the most recent changes WDW has been making (as opposed to a few years ago), I would have otherwise been more hesitant. But I feel like lately, even in the areas I’ve been skeptical, I’m liking the end result.

And there is a bit of irony in the idea of not wanting CoP to change, when the point of the show is to embrace progress. So, I’m all in for this. Could I end up disappointed? Sure. But I’m very hopeful.

I’m already hearing potential lines in my head.

“I hear they are trying to land a man on the moon. It’ll never work.”

It might be more realistic to quote my grandfather who said, “It’s fake”. We were at his house, watching on a tv my dad had brought along, since my grandparents didn’t have one nor could they see a reason for one. They were born in 1901, the beginning of the CoP vignettes.

When DH and I moved here 52 years ago, this area had had electricity less than 10 years.

I’m happy to have the Walt segment recreated. It was exciting to see him excited about the World’s Fair and then be able to see it for myself. Tho the things I recall most were the heat and all the walking.

Good news, WDW has those too.

I think that’s where Disney got the idea :wink:

Did you hear that Disney plans to create a “sister” attraction right next to CoP? The theme song goes, “There’s a great dystopian tomorrow…”

Is it going in the old Stitch location?

One of the incomplete items on my Life List. I’ll likely never get there now.

Yes please.
For me COP is only for nursing or napping babies. :winking_face_with_tongue:
I would love to want to ride it again. :growing_heart::growing_heart::growing_heart:

You know, I realize we live in an era where we’re supposed to “embrace diversity” and all, but between @Jeff_AZ wanting to destroy every classic ride at MK, and you saying such “hateful” things about CoP, this has gone TOO FAR!!!

The best part of WDW is it is big enough for all of us.

Attractions I don’t like will divert people from attractions I DO like.

I’m really excited for this update! Also glad it isn’t closing until after my trip (in 10 days!)

My family loves the theme song and the attraction is one we never miss if we can help it. But it could definitely use an infusion of new life. I’m especially excited for the Walt animatronic - seeing him at Disneyland was truly special.

I have mixed feelings about losing all the history of the existing scenes, but that will always be available on YouTube, I suppose!

Exciting news! Am I the only one who misses “Time of Your Life”?? That’s the song I grew up with.

I’m questioning whether the bulk of today’s bell curve really cares about history older than what they can remember.

I would argue that the “story” the CoP sets out to tell is that as much as things keep changing/progressing, some things remain the same (importance of family, etc). So, I think they can tell this same story.

The fact that it was historical in nature was a means to TELL that story, but not the story itself.
