Business or Pleasure? Both. Both Is Good: A Trip Retrospective

I recently had the opportunity to attend a nursing conference that was occurring at a DS conference center. How could I say no??

Some colleagues from my previous healthcare organization were attending too, and we decided to make it a business + pleasure experience. We called ourselves #thewolfpack

You all know that I’ve been to the World way more times than I can count. My three colleagues have had little to no experience at WDW. Here they are left to right (and then there’s me way back there)

  • DFS (Dear Friend Last Initial) had never been
  • DFP had been once over 20 years ago
  • DFM had never been

They left the planning to me and I consulted them at key planning milestones.

The first thing I did was get them on property. The conference was happening at the Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista - Disney Springs, less than a mile walk to DS. But why stay there when we could stay at Port Orleans French Quarter for even less than the price of the conference hotel??

There were mixed feelings - and I sense, budgets - about visiting the parks. Left to my own I’d have been in the parks every night, but keeping their needs and wishes in mind we settled on one night at Epcot After Hours for all four of us, and one 4P1D for two of us (me and DFP) during our extended stay. I think my friends were worried that there would not be enough to do without visiting the parks - but we all know better and they quickly learned too!

DFP flew down on Monday afternoon to get the place warmed up for us
DFM and DFS flew down at o’dark-thirty on Tuesday morning and joined DFP poolside for the day
And yours truly flew down Tuesday afternoon after putting in a busy half day in the office, as responsible people do. I got a LOT of work done on my flight - funny how 3 uninterrupted hours makes you super productive!

Then the fun began…

Day 1: Tuesday

This was my arrival day. I had an on-time departure from the MHT and an on-time touchdown at the MCO. I had been lucky to upgrade my seat due to my status as a cardholder with Southwest so I was in like row 6 or something and I was off the plane in a jiffy. I snagged a Starbucks right after you leave the secure area, on the same level with the monorail, and that was a smart choice! No lines, no waiting - whereas I’ve waited a real long time at the one by Bag Claim plenty of times. My bag was one of the first off the plane, and I zipped on over to Alamo to pick up my vehicle.

I had rented a Jeep and boy was she pretty! But she was entirely too much car for me. Good information as we are starting to shop for the next vehicle for our family! I see these rentals as an extended test drive and I can mark this one right off my list. It’s just too hard to get in and out of, and the cargo space was meh.

I stopped at Publix for water, yogurt, bananas, and sunscreen.

And I rolled on in to POFQ at 650pm! My friends were readying themselves for our dinner plans. I dumped my bags, freshened up real quick, and off we went.

We were very very bad about photos this night.

But we had a LOVELY dinner at California Grill! Our friend DFM was celebrating 10 years free from breast cancer and 28 years free from non-Hodgkins lymphoma, and our server Ray made sure to honor her most wonderfully! He was a chatty fellow who has been working up there for a long, long time, and so he knew everything there was to know about the menu and tidbits of history. He timed everything perfectly so we were all finishing our dinners just as they announced that it was fireworks time.

While we were out watching, he cleared the table. He brought our desserts, with a couple extra treats for DFM, and a round of champagne for all of us to toast DFM

It was a magical start to our Business + Pleasure visit to the world

Day 2: Full day of conference

Although all of our rooms were close to one another, we still needed a spot to meet up each day. We had walked past the frog fountain (we called it the frog pond) on the way to the car to get to Cali Grill the night before, and we chose that.

The morning weather was cool, but pleasant, and I enjoyed sitting on the bench waiting for my friends to join me so we could head out to the conference

It was a FULL day of sessions today, but so much great information and such inspiring speakers!

But we were all kind of toast by the end of the day, having packed our brains full! I texted the group toward the end of the last session of the day: “Starbucks anyone?” and they all enthusiastically responded: YES!

As we piled into the car and drove the short distance to DS, I had them enter their order into my Starbucks app. We parked in the Lime Garage, and made our way over to the Starbucks at Marketplace. Our drinks came out right as we approached! Thank you Starbucks for making me look like an absolute star to my friends! They were amazed and kept remarking, “We wouldn’t know what we were doing without you here!”

Coffee drinks in hand, we headed back to POFQ for a quick rest, a change of wardrobe, and readied ourselves for Epcot After Hours!

Now, when we were planning this trip I realized that the AH event was on the same day as the full day of conference sessions. I thought it might be a bad idea, but my friends said, “WE CAN SLEEP WHEN WE’RE DEAD!” :grimacing: Okay!

So off we went!

I loved that, while we were at CR for dinner on Tuesday, they all just had to buy their first ears! DFS is a glamour girl and thought the glittery gold ones suited her best. DFM chose green ones in celebration of kicking cancer’s ass not once but TWICE! And DFP chose Minnie Mouse classic ears, which were so her! They were into it!

Day 2: Epcot After Hours

We opted to take the bus because I wanted us to ride the Skyliner and to enter via International Gateway. We met at the bus stop at POFQ for 615pm. DFM texted me, “We are at the bus stop!” I looked around. “Um, no - you’re not!” They were at the Epcot bus area, and needed to walk a little further down to get to me for the HS bus. We had just seen a bus for Epcot pull away and DFP texts us, “Hey are you guys on a bus?!”

Momentary panic that she had hopped on that Epcot bus and was wondering where the heck we were. Fortunately, she was still making her way to us. Phew!

The bus came in short order - bus service at POFQ is top notch! - and we made the short trip to HS. DFM said, “Wait! Why are we at Hollywood Squares?” I pointed up and said “Because that is how we are getting to Epcot!” She said, “OH! We are going to ride the EuroCars?! Awesome!”

So for the rest of the trip we talked about Hollywood Squares and the EuroCar. I might always call Skyliner by that new name

Our dinner plan tonight was snacking and drinking in World Showcase.

But first thinks first, amirite?

Yes, just 3. DFP decided to hold off for a margarita. Both. Both is good, I told her. But she stuck to her guns :woman_shrugging:

We got food from Isla Fresca - they had the ceviche and I had the jerk chicken - and it was all delicious. And Epcot was putting on her nicest evening for my newbie friends

We had to take this iconic shot, obviously

We stopped to see whoever this was at the Garden Rocks show

I felt a little bad because the theater was almost empty  It was good music - covers of country songs you all know and love, the last of which was “Man, I Feel Like A Woman” which was perfect for us!

We ended up in Norway just before the fireworks, and we jumped in line for Frozen. But, as we stood there I checked the hours for La Cava and realized that if we didn’t go there first, we wouldn’t get our margaritas! I taught them the value of getting a margarita and enjoying that in the queue

As we approached the pavilion, DFM saw the pyramid and said, “Oh cool! Egypt!” So naturally that’s what we call it now

Margaritas in hand, we made our way back to Norway. DFM made a “special friend” on the way

We found ourselves back at Frozen, where the line had reduced significantly. It was showing a 50 minute wait — but the line wasn’t even outside of the building. We barely had time to drink our margs before we boarded!

I can’t find our pic from that ride :frowning:

I made them go back into “Egypt” to ride Three Caballeros.

They didn’t get it

We stopped outside of “Egypt” to take some photopass pics. I love this one where we are honoring DFM for her cancer victory!

We got some great magic shots too!

On the way to GOTG we got some pics by the F&G topiary

And then it was time to save the galaxy:

DFM has terrible vertigo so she was going to sit this one out. As we made our way through the queue - it was a walkon to the preshow! - she started waffling and saying, “I think I can handle it.” I did not let her handle it

DFS and DFP told her afterward that she would have died!

Hey where is our ride pic?? I am missing some pics from this trip :frowning:

We headed toward the front of the park, stopping for a restroom break. It afforded me this stunner of a pic

They loved Spaceship Earth, even if Spaceship Earth didn’t love all of them. DFM is a smudge

And then it was time for Moana, Journey Of Water:

We rode Nemo (no pics) and LWTL (no pics) and Soarin (no pics), and decided to scope out some snackages. I will say that unlike other AH events I’ve been to, the snack and beverage carts at this event were hard to find! In fact we only saw two all night - one where the CM was packing it up with 90 minutes to go in the event, and the one where we got ourselves some snacks. I was very disappointed in that aspect of the event. But the Mickey Sandwich was still awesome:

After snacks my friends were flagging and we decided it was time to go :frowning:

We stopped for a quick selfie as we exited the park

It was 1158pm - not bad! We only left 32 minutes before the end of the event, but we had done everything on our list except Figment (which is, honestly, skippable).

I thought the way we approached the evening was absolutely perfect. The 2hrs from when we arrived to when the event started we well utilized for festival foods and drinks. And once the event started the park was a ghost town! Everything was a walk-on (except Soarin because of the time it takes a show to run). The weather was absolutely perfect. And we had a ton of fun and laughs together! I had been worried that an Epcot event would be hard to maximize because of the sheer size of the park. But it was a non-issue as it turned out. I would absolutely do an Epcot AH again in the future - but I would stock up on snacks at the first cart I could find!!

The bus to POFQ was waiting for us when we walked up, and we had a quick trip back Home. We staggered to our rooms and fell into bed. We had another early morning ahead of us - a 2/3 day of conference sessions - and we needed some sleep!

Day 3: 2/3 Day of Conference Sessions, Pool Time, Nap Time, Fun Time

Morning came quickly :face_with_bags_under_eyes: but we rallied

Early morning is my favorite time of day at any WDW resort. So peaceful and pretty.

Conference today started a tiny bit later than the first day. We were in one room allllllllll morning and into the afternoon, and the sessions were not as good as the day before. Needless to say, we were all on the struggle bus by the time the sessions ended.

We headed back to POFQ and grabbed some lunch at Sassagoula Float Works. I had the jerk chicken tenders (yes, jerk chicken again - what can I say it sounded good), DFM had a burger, DFP had a salad with grilled chicken, and DFS had a caprese sandwich, IIRC. Everyone enjoyed their lunch poolside in the perfect afternoon weather.

The pool was not all that busy and we easily found 4 chairs together. This was around 2pm. We lounged and swam. And @Julianne_fki I tried out the slide and it was :-1: Short, slow, and not at all exciting. I would give it a 2/10. What do you think of the POFQ slide? I told my friends about your slide rating quest! They thought you sound fun!!

I got us some beignets after a while:

They were fresh, hot, and covered in powdered sugar! Delicious!!

We all headed in for a much needed nap, and then to get ready for our dinner at DS. I texted them to remind them that this was an Ears Optional occasion (but strongly recommended).

DFS asked if she could borrow my AK ones! Everyone else was definitely planning to wear ears too!

We took the ferry to DS

It’s always such a delightful ride!

We were right on time for our Wine Bar George reservation. I saw that the tables on the balcony were all occupied, but I requested that area if at all possible, anyway. The hostess advised she would see what she could do, and took my phone number to notify us when the table was ready. We enjoyed some live entertainment on the stage right there in front of WBG and next to the amphicar launch space - which they all thought was so cool - and it wasn’t long before they called — yes called! so note this for yourselves — to say the table was ready. I almost didn’t answer the unfamiliar number!

The hostess had been able to get us a balcony table and it was divine!

We had The Big Board, some wine (of course), mac and cheese bites, and meatballs. It was the perfect “girl dinner” dinner. We loved the view, and that we could enjoy the live entertainment while we dined, too. And again, the weather was perfection!

I’m going to have to come back to add more photos after my friends share theirs with me. We actually took quite a few photos that evening but I don’t have them!

After dinner we did a bit of shopping - DFS’s daughter wanted “Cinderella blue” ears so she was on a mission which she successfully accomplished! We enjoyed more live music at the bands throughout and just soaked up the vibe. It was a stunner night!

But, the “We’ll Sleep When We’re Dead!” crowd from back home was not the same crowd that came on the trip, and we headed back to the resort to get some zzzzs before our final day of conference. I suppose it was good to have them keeping me somewhat in check - I’d have been out super late checking out Yehaa Bob’s show if not for their voices of reason

I have not tried it yet! It’s hard to try moderate resorts when you own DVC. I find that I’m either using DVC points or paying for a value with cash. I think I’ve seen pictures, though, and it doesn’t look great. Is it worse than Jambo, do you think?

I love your IASW ears.

You guys rocked EP hours.

About the same.

Lame

I hear you on the DVC v Value. Moderates are tricky that way in general I think because the splurge to a low priced deluxe is not all that much, but the leap is pretty steep from value. So I find that most times moderates end up overlooked. But POFQ is so sweet and it was in the budget for what I was being comped for lodging for this conference. And so there I landed.

What a fun trip!!

CM are THE BEST! What a magical start to the trip.

Haha, these spoke to me too and became an impulse buy at Island Mercantile on my last trip. I love them!

Excellent strategy!

Great to know! It definitely sounds more leisurely than my last experience of EEH, so I’ll keep it in mind for future trips. Is WS open during AH? I thought EEH lacked atmosphere because all WS shops/restaurants (and actually virtually all of the ones at the front of the park) are closed.

100%

Fully agree, it’s lame - I rated this lowest of all the slides I’ve tried (even Jambo) in my trip report last March. I stayed at POR, but wanted to try both slides (the POR one is a bit better, though also not far ahead in the rankings).

This is why we forgive POFQ its lame slide

Looks like a great spot! I usually skip Disney Springs and have never really gotten the point (I find shopping malls overhwhelming), but maybe I should give it another try at least for the dining. There are just so many resort options I still want to try first!

Can’t wait to hear about the 4P1D experience!

I think a very few select locations are, but that was why we started there during regular park hours

Great pics, love the ears! I may be helping a friend plan a trip who has never been so this is fun to pick up tips! Also how nice to celebrate your friend beating cancer, love it. Your California Grill evening sounded wonderful, really want to eat there but might have to wait til it can be a date night with DH. Kids don’t eat enough to justify the price!

Definitely too much for smal appetites. But I found it to be the perfect amount of food as a whole. Not overstuffed. Not leaving hungry.

Day 4: Morning of Conference Sessions, a Wild Lunch, a Nap, and a Monorail-ish Tour

Friday morning came even more quickly than Thursday morning, but with a later start at the conference, we had time to fuel up proper-like

I had a lovely conversation with the couple at the next table over, while I waited for my friends to arrive. It’s so hard sometimes to not jump into the conversation - but these folks were into it. They were talking about their plans and they had a dining package for “that thing, you know at night, with the water, and Mickey. You know.. the thing!” I leaned over and whispered “Fantasmic!” We chatted for a while and I was able to answer a few other questions for them. It’s just so easy to talk to people at WDW!

After breakfast we headed over to the conference center and dragged ourselves into the sessions. Honestly, this might have been the best of the best. I found myself moved to tears, and enraged, and inspired to act after hearing how the profession of Nursing was pushed into the background in the 1930s after it had become the single most powerful way for women to achieve major progress toward rights and freedoms and equality. We have been oppressed, and our professional services are hidden in a room charge. But enough about that. It was a very good ending to the conference!

We took some time to take a few photos so that we had actual proof that we attended

and then it was time for a WILD lunch!

I loved showing off all of my favorite spaces to my friends, and their reaction to the Jambo House lobby was priceless! I toured them around there a bit while we waited for it to get closer to the time of our lunch reservation. I showed them the artwork, we visited the gift shop, and we checked out the savanna. There weren’t too many animals out there, but they got the jist.

The real show was over at Kidani today! While the lobby is not as impressive, the animal activity was WOW! I loved watching them take it all in

Before long our table was ready. The CM at the reception desk asked if we wanted our photo under the sign! I had never, in all of my times visiting, been offered that before! Of course we said “YES!”

We sat down at a table not right up on the windows but very close. I was careful at each dining location we visited all week to be the one to take the chair with my back to the action  My friends noticed and tried to encourage me to take a different seat. But I’ve seen it all, and will see it again soon, so I declined in favor of them having the better views.

I oriented them to the menu by saying, “and the bread service is non-negotiable!” :rofl Our server got a kick out of that - and my friends agreed that it was outstanding!

DFM got the braised beef

I got the tandoori chicken sandwich (it says it comes on naan but – that was a roll, however you slice it). Very good though!

DFS got the burger, and DFP got the salad with shrimp. Everyone loved their meals

OK funny side story time:
On Tuesday night DFM used the restroom at Cali Grill and returned to the table excited to tell us “and there was a sink that was meant for a person of small stature” (ok she said dwarf - which she said was fitting for WDW). I said, “DFM — is that perhaps meant for handicap access?? You NURSE!” We all died laughing and agreed that it must be that. Although, honestly, I think it’s even low for that – it might actually be intended for children!

Fast forward to Friday. This was not the first time she did this all week, but DFM took this photo to say, “See?!”

Maybe you had to be there

Our server was careful to celebrate DFMs cancer victories with a special dessert

And then we rolled ourselves out of the restaurant and back to POFQ. With full bellies and short on sleep we were more than ready for naps

I had to get up early from my nap to take a (very frustrating - maddening even!) work meeting. After which I needed some peace and quiet. So naturally I did this:

and then did this

while the wash ran. I think I mentioned it elsewhere but I want to say again here that this spa set up at this resort is perfection. The spa is kind of hidden behind some hedges and under a tree – if you’re not looking for it you would never know it was there, honestly. And this is what makes it so great! First, it’s almost never got anyone in it. But most importantly, the KIDS don’t see it — so they aren’t in it! And it’s so separated from the main pool that the parents aren’t inclined to let the kids hop in while they stay in their loungers; they would have to go with and who wants that?? I think all of the hot tubs should be arranged this way at all of the resorts!

On my way back to my room to get ready while the laundry dried I saw a carriage passing by

I had reserved a ride for me and my friends, but when I figured out their pace I knew it was going to be more work than it would be worth to squeeze it in. So I canceled. One of these days I’m going go get to do that!!

We all got ourselves together and headed on over to the TTC to kick off our monorail tour. I thought this was a pretty neat pic of us, caught while waiting for the tram

Gosh we are cute!

Stop 1:

We got in line as soon as we arrived and waited only maybe 15-20 mins. I scooted downstairs to try to get us on the list for Trader Sams but no dice. I kept trying while we sat drinking and munching and finally got a spot… for an estimated 110 minute wait :grimacing:

Our server at Tambu was handling that entire room by himself. He was super high energy - perhaps even a little over the top! - but he took great care of us. My friends had the view of the… scaffolding out the window. Sure you could see the castle a bit, but the scaffolding was a bummer.

The drinks and eats were fantastic, though. I meant to send a noodz pic to @Enchantedbythemouse

We tooled around in the Poly but it was HOPPIN in that lobby, so we eventually decided to move on toward our next destination

Stop 2:

My friends were stunned by the fanciness of this hotel! It is a stunner, you’ve got to admit! We checked out the hidden characters in the tilework by the monorail, popped into Basin to see if they had anything different from the DS location (they didn’t), and headed for our next lounge

I’d ask you to match the drink to the friend, but you don’t know them so it would be kinda hard.

We were able to see the What’s App Easter Parade and tried to snag pics but the reflection was too much off the windows, so you get this freaky composition

I told them all about why we call it the What’s App Easter Parade and they thought that our rabid chipmunk friend @Enchantedbythemouse sounds like a good time. I assured them she is!

It was pretty quiet at Enchanted Rose while we were there, and it was almost fireworks time, too - so I’m not sure why. We saw some fireworks off in the distance - but I never figured out what they were. They were not MK and they were not in the direction of Epcot (rather, they were kind of to the left and behind MK from where we were). Anyway, they were fun to watch.

It was about this time that my friends kind of begged me to go back to the resort. Honestly, I could have stayed out quite a bit longer, and I really wanted us to get to Steakhouse 71 for drinks and that cake (!) but I took my cue from them since me and DFP did have an early and super jam packed day planned for Saturday.

So we hopped on the monorail and headed back.

We caught the fireworks on the way by which was pretty magical!

And, in retrospect our timing was perfection because we got back to TTC and the trams before the masses came after fireworks were done.

We arrived back at POFQ just after 10. We said our goodbyes to DFM and DFS who were on a very early (615am) flight home. And before long I was back at home, and settled in for the night

I love this report! I can see and feel the joy in each of you. I am always delighted to bring someone new and share how magical it can really be! For some reason, when I saw this picture, the “5th wheel” person in the boat bothered me. She looked like she was trying not to photobomb but didn’t know what to do with herself. So I made a copy and magic erasered her out. Hope that’s okay!

Haha! Well done!

She was a hoot actually. Super fun ferry friend!

But I like the edited pic!
