Hi, every once in a while the AP calendar has bonus days that don’t count against your allowed park reservation allowance. But what do we know about them? Why do they have them? Are these low park reservation days that Disney is trying to fill? Anyone have any knowledge or ideas?

Yes I think it’s that. It’s a way to kill multiple birds with one stone - keep the parks full, make APs happy, without affecting other guests too much.
