Are the Universal Annual Passes like the Disney ones where you can purchase them and then activate them later (moving the expiration date to 1 year after activated, not after purchased), or do they always expire 1 year (or 15 months if using that deal) after purchase? We aren’t sure if we are going, but I was going to get one just in case to make room reservations with the discount (if discounts do appear for my dates later down the road).
They are activated at the park. I bought mine last August and activated in October. I also did the flexible payment plan (something Disney does not offer to me).

You should also know that you don’t actually have to have the annual pass when you book the room. Liners have reported both being asked for the pass at check-in and never being asked for it at all.
