Kicking this off a few days early so you guys can feel the stress with me. DH and I are heading to Orlando for the RunDisney festivities this weekend!
We had originally planned to leave Wednesday, run the 5k together Friday and then come home Sunday after I ran the 10 miler. But then we doubled checked schedules and realized DS has his spring band concert Thursday night and DD14 and DD10 have their spring choir concerts Friday night.
So we rearranged the trip to leave first flight out Saturday morning to make the Expo before it closes at 3 pm. Now skipping the 5k but I’m still running the 10 mile solo and then we’re hanging out until Tuesday night.
So we hope. Because right now our weather forecast here in North Texas looks like this…
It does look like it’ll clear up Saturday at some point so we can probably make it to Orlando Saturday but any sizable delay will cause us to miss the Expo (current arrival time with no delay is 11 am). My other concern is that our incoming flight is a red eye from Seattle and I don’t know what they will do if that flight can’t make it in if in fact we do have severe thunderstorms all night Friday.
So stressful! I am considering flying out of Houston Friday morning instead as their weather was looking better than ours for Friday. Which would mean driving 230 miles out of the way to Houston. Hilariously, I’ve already done this once before to make a RunDisney race. Not ideal but at least it’s an option.
We decided we’d make the final call Thursday morning when we can see hourly forecasts up until Saturday morning. Stay tuned….
A few years back when we had one of the famous February DFW icestorms, our flight to MCO for a Sat morning was canceled on Friday around noon. DH decided he wanted to drive (remember, there is ice on the roads). We hopped in the truck - took us a long time to make it south of DFW to where there was no more ice, that part was treacherous, and then drove through the night. But he used to drive for UPS and loves driving… still, it was crazy.
Update: Friday weather is now mostly predicted to be rain. I am really tempted to fly out tomorrow and let DH fly in Saturday but (1) I really don’t want to miss my girls’ concert tomorrow night and (2) don’t want to spend the night alone and am looking forward to traveling with DH.
Currently forecasted thunderstorms between 3-7 am Saturday morning. We actually bumped our flight from 7 am to 8 am. I was just really stressing about that overnight connection not being able to make it at all with the overnight weather. Here’s hoping that’s the right call.
We do have a small buffer to allow for delays. Flight is scheduled to land at 12. Expo closes at 3. Fingers crossed we make it.
Other folks have shared experiences on picking up bibs on race day I just (1) need to be there as early as possible and (2) expect not to get a race shirt. Bummer. But at least I’d get to run.
This is correct. There is an area somewhere by gEar check for day of bibs. Just as the CMs that are wandering about. No shirt, unfortunately. They may have some way of letting you grab it somewhere later?
I understand. This is why we usually come in the day before the expo, just so we’re already there. But it’s all good! runDisney has ways to make sure you get your race in!
I requested a MV from the Poly at 2:15 am on Sunday. Picked up at 2:35 and in line waiting on security to open at 2:50. I had my bib in hand by 3:10. I think I was the second person to go through.
We ended up having to cut the trip a day short due to a work emergency DH had to get home for. So, instead of mid-morning Saturday through late Tuesday it was mid-afternoon Saturday through late Monday. 48 hours. But, we still had a great time.
Race temps were not ideal to say the least. 70s. 94% humidity and dew point in the 60s. I was a gross, sweaty mess. And off my goal time by about 10 minutes.
We had fun anyway! Had our first ever visit to La Cava and DH had his first rides on Tron and GotG (we only rode these plus SE. Least rides I’ve ever done. Lol). First time for DH at Baseline T/H.
We have our first ever DCL cruise next month and then going to hop back to BC for a few nights before visiting Epic Universe! So at least we’ll be back soon! I booked this cruise back in 2021 and we have had to reschedule so many times. Can’t believe we’re finally getting to do it!
